Your personal safety starts with awareness. By making simple, proactive habits a part of your everyday life, you can help protect yourself—and contribute to a safer community.

Everyday Safety Tips

  • Trust your instincts. If something feels out of place, it probably is.
  • Keep your personal information secure: credit/debit cards, ID, address, etc.
  • Do not open your doors to strangers (at home or in your vehicle).
  • In public, stay aware of your surroundings—avoid becoming distracted.
  • Avoid waving around large amounts of money in public.
  • If you believe you are being followed, head to a well-lit public place and call the police.
  • When walking alone at night, stick to well-lit routes and avoid secluded areas.
  • Be aware of ongoing scams in your community. Don’t provide personal information unless the person contacting you is verified.
  • Visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
  • If you arrive home and find your windows or doors tampered with, do not enter—call the police for assistance.

Peace Bonds

A Peace Bond is a court-order that helps protect someone who fears another person may harm them, their property, or their family. It can be requested through the courthouse when there is concern about future risks, even if no crime has yet occurred. Conditions may include no contact, staying away from certain places, or surrendering firearms. If the bond is broken, the person may face criminal charges.

If you believe you need a Peace Bond, you may go directly to the courthouse for more guidance.
