The Woodstock Police Service Canine Unit plays a vital role in enhancing community safety and supporting frontline officers in their daily duties.
The Unit consists of one Canine Handler and Police Service Dog (PSD) Cruz, who work together around the clock to support investigations, patrol operations, and community outreach.

About PSD Cruz
PSD Cruz is a male German Shepherd, born in the Netherlands and trained through Tri-State Canine Services in Ohio, USA. He joined the Woodstock Police Service following the tragic line-of-duty death of PSD Taz in July 2023. In honour of Taz’s service and as a gesture of appreciation to the community for its ongoing support, WPS held a “Name the K9” contest, where residents helped select Cruz’s name.
Cruz turned four years old on October 20, 2025, and is known for his high energy, strong drive, and unwavering dedication to his handler and community.
Training and Certifications
PSD Cruz is certified in General Patrol, General Detection, and Narcotic Detection.
The Canine Unit regularly trains with other Woodstock Police Service sections — including Patrol, Criminal Investigations, and Community Services — and also partners with neighbouring police canine teams for joint training exercises.
This ongoing collaboration ensures that both Cruz and his handler remain at the highest standard of readiness and effectiveness. Together, they respond to a variety of calls for service, assist in suspect tracking, evidence searches, drug detection, and public demonstrations.
PSD Cruz not only supports frontline operations but also serves as an ambassador for policing in Woodstock, helping strengthen the bond between officers and the community they serve.
